In the meantime, check out our list of the 7 things to consider when building a pool and you’ll end up with your dream pool.

One of the first questions to consider about your pool is what material you will use to construct it. There are several options on the market, each with its advantages and disadvantages.

1. Concrete

Concrete is one of the most common materials used to construct pools and for good reason – it can be easily customised depending on the size and shape you want and is extremely durable – concrete pools can last for decades, if not longer. However, due to the porous nature of concrete, concrete pools require extra maintenance and treatments to prevent algae from embedding into the pool surfaces. Over time, you’ll also likely need to resurface a concrete pool due to the long-term impact of saltwater. Finally, the actual construction of concrete pools can take quite a while and certainly longer than pools made from fiberglass or other material.

2. Fiberglass

Fiberglass is another popular pool material. While concrete is extremely porous, fiberglass is essentially the opposite, requiring less maintenance and chemicals. Fiberglass pools can also be built quickly – in a matter of days. This quick installation is because the shells of fiberglass pools are already constructed off-site, which is also one of their disadvantages. Fiberglass pools cannot be customised at all, and depending on your needs and vision, it might be difficult to find a fiberglass pool that fits your bill.

3. Vinyl

Another option is a vinyl liner pool. These pools have a vinyl liner between the water and structure of the pool, usually made from steel. The biggest advantage of these types of pools is the price, which can be considerably cheaper than concrete or fiberglass pools and can also be customised. A disadvantage of this type of pool is that the vinyl liners can be damaged from toys or pets and likely need to be replaced every few years.

4. Location

“Location, location, location,” isn’t an expression that just applies to real estate, but also to where you choose to build your pool. We recommend placing your pool in direct sunlight and away from windy areas. Direct sunlight will keep your pool at a comfortable temperature while avoiding windy areas will minimise water evaporation and the need to refill your pool. We also recommend keeping the pool away from sewer lines and other underground pipes.

5. Shape + Size

With so many options to customise your pool, you can let your imagination run wild when it comes to pool shapes and sizes.

Common pool shapes include rectangle, oval, and L-shaped and for good reason: these shapes look great and are ideal for a wide variety of activities. Other styles are an option, depending on your aesthetic and budget. Just keep in mind that the more unusual your pool shape is, the more expensive it probably will be. When thinking about pool size, be sure to consider the overall size of your backyard and the proportions that you want for your pool and the lounge area around it.

6. Access + Safety

When planning your pool, it’s incredibly important to think about the people who will be using it. If children will be using the pool, we think that building the pool within the eyesight of people in the house is a must. The pool and surrounding area should also contain alarms and safety gates to restrict access when necessary. If elderly people will be using the pool, it’s best to think of safe and convenient pool access.

7. Maintenance

A final issue to consider when planning your pool is the maintenance you’ll need to oversee as a pool owner.

This includes thinking about a Maytronics Dolphin robotic pool cleaner that makes cleaning your pool super easy, the type of filter that best suits your needs, and what type of pool water you’ll want to use.
